1980 - People at school

The new school was built in 1841. In the 1851 census, the schoolmaster was named as John Stoke, and there were said to be 159 scholars. By 1871, the master was John Lacey, who was there till the 1890s.

In 1889 it was said to have capacity for 80 children, though average attendance of only 35; by 1895, under ‘Miss E Saunders’ attendance was up to 47, by 1907 50, and in 1915 54.

We have photographs and oral memories of school life in the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s, and some written descriptions remain too.
